Magellan sells consumer products division to MiTac

16 Dec 2008

Magellan Navigation finally agreed on selling its consumer products division to MiTAC International. Expected to close in January, the financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.

The company's consumer products division is responsible for the creation of the companies RoadMate® and MaestroTM series portable car navigation systems, and the Triton® outdoor handheld navigation devices, being topsellers in the US and Canada, not least due to the company's extensive advertising campaign. Twice Mobile ranked Magellan 3rd place on the list of ‘most-advertised PND brands' during the twelve-month period ending September 2008, accounting for 18.6% of the total share of advertised models. The top four brands were Garmin, TomTom, Magellan and Mio, in that order.

Among the ten most-advertised PND models during the same period, Magellan's Roadmate-1200 was 4th and the Maestro-4250 was 6th.
