German Aerospace Centre (DLR): Traffic Data Will Be Provided Via Radar Satellite

The German radar satellite TerraSAR-X soon sends high quality images from selected sections of motorways in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and California.
The goal is to develop a procedure for large-scale traffic data capture. The radar will provide traffic data independent of weather conditions and regardless if it is day or night. There are some motorways which will be tested in Germany (A4 and A5) and California (Interstate 5). Up to now TerraSAR-X sent about 10.000 high quality radar images back to Earth.
