The popularity of consumer telematics systems is steadily growing due to the rising awareness of car drivers, car manufacturers, telematics service provider and goverments. Built into new cars more than 30 million on-board telematics units will be shipped by 2013, which represents a penetration of nearly 44%.

The advantages of communication and positioning technologies in cars include cost savings, reduced environmental impact, infotainment, efficiency, improved safety and security. There are several main drivers for the increasing sector of consumer telematics. On the one hand there is a heavy demand for advanced infotainment services to enhance navigation through real-time location-based content such as traffic, tourist information, parking space availability and fuel prices. On the other hand aftermarket telematics solutions for the tracking of stolen cars and insurance applications will face a strong growth as well.
