UK - Portugals navigation software company NDrive launched two Portable Navigation Devices (PNDs) featuring consumer-friendly oblique arial imagery, called "Photo mapping".
While navigating the system automatically chooses between 4 diagonal perspectives and a bird's eye view to select the best perspective for the driver. Additionally, the user can choose his preferred view manually. According to NDrive, the PNDs are designed to satisfy drivers' and pedestrians' needs and the "Photo mapping" feature even makes navigating on foot a whole new experience.
The norwegian company Blom ASA provided the oblique arial imagery. NDrive's photo mapping is currently available in 29 cities of the UK with the ability to switch to standard TeleAtlas mapping, wherever it's not.
The photo mapping feature for the major cities throughout the rest of Europe is also available on plug and play memory cards. The data is stored on 8 GB SD cards. The two PNDs., G280 and G800, are sold at £199.00 (USD 400) and £315.00 (USD 630).
The device may catch on picture; while concentrating on driving, it might give to much information. For a pedestrian the bird's eye view could be the most interesting part of it.
