According to ABI Research, the integration of sensors into asset tracking applications has added a new dimension to the business value equation.
Soon after GPS technology became available for non-military purposes, simple location tracking was one of the original applications launched by the commercial telematics industry. Due to more powerful server applications, better digital mapping and faster graphics, this basic function, being still the core of the trailer tracking business, now provides more comprehensive data to fleet managers.
New developments in load content and tyre pressure monitoring becoming available from many of the market participants enhance the initial offerings such as refrigerated container temperature and trailer door open/close sensors enabling greater operational efficiency now.
Due to the recent fuel price hikes have created increasing interest in monitoring the fuel usage of auxiliary power units and truck engines, ABI expects to see new applications emerging that will optimise temperature control to stay within specified limits whilst minimising fuel usage.
According to principal analyst David Alexander, tyre pressure monitoring can contribute to overall fleet efficiency, because under-inflated trailer tyres require more fuel to overcome increased rolling resistance, and tyres are more likely to burst if excessively under- or over-inflated. "So there are cost-avoidance benefits as well as operational efficiencies to be gained from the latest generation of trailer tracking systems", he added.
