Nearly 60 million ADAS-equipped vehicles by 2013

05 Feb 2009

Market researcher iSuppli has announced that the number of ADAS-equipped cars sold worldwide will triple between 2008 and 2013 to reach almost sixty million. Due to the potential of the technology to reduce accidents, injuries and death, the ADAS sales are expected to be pushed to 56.3 million in 2013 from 17.3 million in 2008.

According to iSuppli's vice president in automotive, Phil Magney, preventing loss of life and saving money for governments, insurance companies, car makers and consumers is what ADAS is all about. "In the US, the cost per accident is roughly $36,500. In 2003, there were 6.3 million accidents involving 11.2 million cars, causing more than 42,000 deaths and 2.9 million injuries. That's a major reason why automakers are rushing to add ADAS features to their cars."

The declining costs of the electronics required, especially sensors and sensor technologies, enables automakers to add more ADAS features. Furthermore, regional regulations are putting pressure on automakers to embrace ADAS features.

Although it won't happen overnight, Magney believes that autonomous driving will soon appear on crowded roads and points out ADAS technologies are paving the way to it.
